Simon reflects on successful hosting of Netball Cup

The secretary general of Netball Namibia, Sophia Simon, shared insights into the extensive preparations that were undertaken to ensure the successful hosting of the Africa Netball Cup at the MTC Dome at the coast.

In an interview with New Era Sport, Simon said, “Netball Namibia undertook extensive preparations to ensure the successful hosting of the Africa Netball Cup at the MTC Dome. This included logistical planning, venue preparation and stakeholder engagement.” She elaborated on the steps taken, beginning with a thorough assessment of the MTC Dome to ensure it met international standards for such a major tournament. “We made sure there were no adjustments or upgrades needed to the facilities, ensuring adequate seating capacity, and enhancing amenities for both players and spectators,” she said.

She also highlighted the importance of collaboration with local authorities and sponsors. “We coordinated with local authorities and sponsors to secure the necessary funding and resources for the event. We established partnerships with government bodies, private sector sponsors and community organisations to garner support,” she added.

When asked about the tournament’s impact on Namibian netball, Simon noted that the Africa Netball Cup is expected to have a profound influence. “This event provides local players with an opportunity to compete at a higher level against some of Africa’s best teams,” she said. “This exposure is vital for our development, allowing players to gain experience and enhance their skills.”

Additionally, hosting such a prestigious tournament raises awareness of netball within Namibia, and inspires young athletes to take up the sport. “The visibility of netball can lead to increased participation rates among youth, both girls and boys,” she added.

Simon also highlighted the positive effect on coaching standards. “Local coaches can observe international strategies and techniques used by competing teams, and the knowledge gained can be passed on to local training programmes,” she stated.

Regarding the team’s performance, Simon expressed her contentment. “I am pleased with our team’s performance so far in the tournament. They have shown resilience and determination on the court, and I am happy with their spirit and commitment,” she said.

The secretary general also acknowledged the challenges faced during the organisation of such a significant event. “We encountered challenges, but we actively engaged with corporate sponsors and the government, who recognised the value of supporting sports development in Namibia,” she stated. Looking forward, Simon outlined the long-term legacy of the tournament. “We hope this event will elevate netball’s profile within Namibia, and inspire lasting interest in the sport. Off the court, we aim to improve infrastructure, ensuring facilities are available for training purposes long after the tournament ends. Ultimately, we hope this tournament fosters a culture of excellence in Namibian sports.”
