KATIMA MULILO – The police in the Zambezi are investigating a road accident after a vehicle which was reportedly carrying illegal elephant tusks and other game products overturned at Kapani village, some 90 kilometres south of Katima Mulilo last Friday night.

Sergeant Alex Mawaya the spokesperson of the Namibian Police traffic unit in Zambezi confirmed the incident to Nampa on Monday, saying a case of possession of the elephant tusks and other game products was opened, as well as an inquest to determine the exact cause of death of the driver who died on the spot along the Linyanti – Sangwali road after 22h00 hours.

“It is alleged that the driver lost control of the vehicle which overturned and killed him instantly while other two occupants in the vehicle who survived the accident are still at large,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mawaya said a Quantum bus that was transporting the corpse of an elderly woman from Sachinga Village to the Katima Mulilo mortuary was allegedly bumped by a white Polo sedan on Friday night along the Trans-Caprivi Highway.

It is alleged that the driver of the Polo sedan while trying to overtake the Quantum without noticing that there was an oncoming truck, veered to the left and in the process, hit the Quantum.
The driver of the white Polo fled the scene and is still at large, he said.

The police spokesperson added that other two road accidents were also reported at the Wenela border post over the weekend involving taxis that were smashed by trucks as well as two separate road accidents recorded at the Mission compound. No major fatalities were reported apart from damages to the vehicles in all incidents.

Mawaya further noted that 15 travellers with foreign registered vehicles were issued traffic fines over the weekend for failing to display foreign stickers on their vehicles as required by law in Namibia and other countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The police spokesperson reminded road users to adhere to the rules of the road, especially, at entry and exit points in the Zambezi region.
“The traffic unit will leave no stone unturned in this current festive season campaign operation that will run until 17 January 2025,” he warned.
