The Namibian Wrestling Federation (NWF) has announced the renaming of its prestigious annual President’s Tournament to the Dr Sam Nujoma President’s Tournament.
This change is a tribute to Nujoma’s pivotal role in shaping independent Namibia.
Due to the mourning period, building up to the funeral of the late founding father, the tournament, which was scheduled for 15 February, has been postponed. However, it will resume in 2026 under its new title, honouring the former president’s legacy.
In a statement, the NWF expressed its commitment to upholding the values Nujoma instilled in the country. The federation aims to ensure that his name remains a symbol of determination and discipline in Namibian sports.
“The Dr Sam Nujoma President’s Tournament will remain a key platform for developing local wrestling talent, promoting sportsmanship and celebrating the unity of the Namibian people, the NWF. We invite all to join us in this historic occasion, as we pay tribute to a leader whose legacy endures in the hearts of our people and in Namibian wrestling,” the NWF said.
