Ikosa launches ‘Unmasking Postnatal Depression’ book

With compassion and clarity, communications specialist Morna Ikosa breaks the silence surrounding postnatal depression in her book, empowering professionals to foster understanding, support and healing where it’s needed most.

Titled “Unmasking Postnatal Depression,” she says the book is a powerful and timely contribution to mental health awareness, serving as a beacon for wellness and human resources’ practitioners.

“This is offering vital insights into a subject that remains largely unspoken within many African communities,” said the author.

She added that it acknowledges the profound impact of postnatal depression, not only on mothers, but also on fathers, offering guidance to help men navigate this challenging period alongside their partners.

Furthermore, the book shares stories of women from different African cultures and their experiences with postnatal depression.

The book also has a dedicated chapter for men, who share their experiences with living and dealing with their partners who have experienced postnatal depression.

Ikosa highlighted that the book comes with a complementary song, which readers can download and listen to while reading the book.

“Unmasking provides insights and wisdom from five dedicated experts—Ute Sinkala, a psychologist; Ujama Nujoma, a medical doctor who has worked in the field of psychiatry; Raghilt Redecker, a midwife; Dorle Verrinder, a lactation consultant; and Juliane Courtney-Clarke, a dietitian and nutrition expert specialising in depression,” she stated.

Ikosa said the book is designed with the reader in mind, with every page compiled and designed to engage the senses of the reader.

She observed that “Unmasking Postnatal Depression” was not just a book, but a powerful tool which empowered mothers, fathers, families and health professionals to confront the often-hidden challenges of postnatal mental health.

“It seeks to reveal the truths about postnatal depression and foster a deeper understanding of mental health issues, guiding you towards healing and personal growth,” she said.
