No salary for murder-accused officer

ONHUNO – The spokesperson of the Namibian Police, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, has confirmed that the salary of murder-accused police officer Sergeant Dimbulukeveni Namhila has been suspended.

She revealed that this follows a disciplinary hearing, after which he was officially placed on suspension effective 12 May 2025.

Shikwambi stated that as a result, “his salary has also been stopped.”

Namhila has been in police custody since May after he was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a truck driver, Eliud Hamukwa, at the Onhuno checkpoint in the Ohangwena region.

His case was postponed to 23 July 2025 for a formal bail application when he last appeared at the Ohangwena Magistrate’s Court.

Hamukwa died on the spot while seated in the front seat of a truck where he was a co-driver.

He was allegedly shot seven times in full view of the police officers who were on duty that night.

Police investigations into the incident are still ongoing.

Last month, during Namhila’s second court appearance, the family of the deceased held a peaceful demonstration outside the magistrate’s court, demanding justice.

They called on the government to deny bail to Namhila, saying he had taken the life of an innocent person.

Hamukwa’s mother, Loide Shilomboleni, has called for a fair and transparent investigation, urging authorities not to protect the accused officer.

She also appealed to the government to reconsider the issuance of firearms to all police officers, stressing that some are not psychologically fit to carry weapons.

“I haven’t slept well since the death of my son. It pains me every day,” she said.

To date, Shilomboleni added, no police officer has visited their home to explain what happened to her son since the incident.
