The Namibian Police has implored all road users to make prior arrangements and to depart well in advance during the upcoming week to avert traffic congestion that may occur due to increased traffic volume as schools resume on Monday, 14 July.
Congestion is one of the contributing factors that may lead to inconsiderate driving behaviour, reckless and or negligent driving, and deliberate defiance of traffic regulations, which leads to road crashes, injuries and even fatalities.
“Accordingly, I have directed all Traffic Unit Commanders in the various policing areas to embark on this Back to School Road Safety awareness; so as to share precautionary measures which will serve as a reminder in terms of adherence traffic regulations and subsequent protection of life and property,” reads a statement from Police Inspector General, Joseph Shikongo.
The statement added that road safety remains a shared responsibility, to which road users are stakeholders.
“It is, therefore, incumbent upon all of us to reduce the risk of accidents, injuries and fatalities on our public roads. Hence, drivers should inspect vehicles and ensure roadworthiness before embarking on a trip. Similarly, strict obedience to road traffic regulations is mandatory,” Shikongo stated.
He urged drivers to keep recommended speeds and encouraged them to reduce speeds and exercise caution on the national roads, especially in populated areas.
“It is advisable to pull over your vehicle when experiencing fatigue, and note that overloading will not be entertained,” Shikongo said.
