Man nabbed for marrying minor

RUNDU – The police in Kavango West on Sunday arrested a 26-year-old Angolan man for committing an immoral practice with a minor. He allegedly traditionally married a 14-year-old grade 5 pupil at Ncaute village.

According to the police, the suspect, who is a cattle herder, has been living with the minor between the months of May 2025 to 17 August 2025, before he was arrested at Ncaute village, Ncuncuni constituency, Kavango West region.

“It’s alleged that the suspect approached and asked for her hand in marriage (traditionally) from the victim’s mother, and promised to support her with school needs, to which the mother agreed and authorised the minor to stay at the suspect’s residence as a result,’’ said Kavango West police spokesperson Chief Inspector Raimbert Muronga.

The mother of the victim, who also resides at Ncaute village, was arrested as an accomplice. “They are to appear in the Rundu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (yesterday), 19 August 2025,’’ Muronga said.

In an unrelated matter, still in Kavango West, the Namibian Police were on Friday morning alerted to an alleged suicide scene, where an adult male was found hanging on a rope up a tree at 08h00 in Nankudu village.

“According to the family members, the deceased left his house on Thursday morning, to go and cut grass for thatching huts, but did not return home that day,’’ said Kavango West regional commander, Commissioner Julia Sakuwa-Neo.

“The family members decided to trace his shoe prints on Friday and found his body hanging in the tree. The motive is not known, and there was no suicide note.

The deceased’s name is Hamunyera Andreas, an adult Namibian male. He was a resident of Nankudu village, and his next of kin were informed,’’ Sakuwa-Neo said.

Another suicide by hanging was also reported on Friday, where it was believed that at an unknown time of the night at Etenderera village, Petrus Hamutenya Kauma (24) allegedly chose to take his life.

According to Sakuwa-Neo, Kauma hanged himself with a rope on a tree. “The motive is also not known, and there was no suicide note left behind. His next of kin were informed. The body was transported to Rundu hospital mortuary for the autopsy to be carried out,” she said.
