China, Namibia expand trade, economic cooperation

China on Friday celebrated the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Namibia with China’s ambassador to Namibia, Zhao Weiping, sharing insights on the two countries’ relations.

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation between the two countries have continued to expand. China has long been one of Namibia’s major trading partners and the largest source of foreign direct investment. As a key development partner, China has implemented a series of aid projects in Namibia which have directly benefited the local people.

“The 35 years of friendly exchanges between China and Namibia have fully demonstrated that both countries attach great importance to the development of bilateral relations, which serves the common interests of both sides and contributes to the well-being of our peoples, and China and Namibia have always been good friends and partners who can trust each other,” he said.

Weiping added that, looking ahead, they are full of confidence in the future of China-Namibia relations.

China stands ready to work with Namibia to fully tap the potential of the bilateral relations and push forward the China-Namibia relations for even greater development.

Speaking during the celebration, Namibia’s deputy minister of international relations and cooperation, Jenelly Matundu, described Namibia-China relationship as one built on trust, shared values, and a mutual vision for the future.

“We reaffirm our commitment to working hand-in-hand with China in building a shared future of peace, prosperity, and sustainable development for our peoples, our continent, and the world,” said Matundu.

She added that over the years, cooperation between Namibia and China had flourished across key sectors of trade, infrastructure, energy, education, public health, defence, culture and science and technology. China has been a steadfast partner in Namibia’s pursuit of sustainable development, from investment in renewable energy projects such as the Rosh Pinah solar power plant and the Otjikoto Biomass Power Station, to the construction of critical infrastructure including schools, housing, and the Hosea Kutako International Airport highway.

“Namibia equally values the people-to-people exchanges that have deepened understanding and friendship between our citizens,” she said. -pmukokobi@nepc.com.na
