ONGWEDIVA – Residents of Ongwediva say it has become unsafe to walk freely in the town, as stray and roaming dogs continue to attack people. In a space of one week, three people were reportedly bitten by dogs.
This was confirmed by Ongwediva Town Council’s environmental health practitioner Penda Kashihakumwa. He said more than 10 cases of dog bites have been recorded in the past five years, with some victims sustaining serious injuries. “This situation is getting out of hand because some residents leave their gates open, allowing dogs to wander onto the streets and attack passersby,” Kashihakumwa stated.
He said that, just this past weekend, two dogs attacked a resident, who was later hospitalised.
Kashihakumwa said the animals have been taken to veterinary services for rabies testing.
If found positive, they will be put down.
Otherwise, they will be relocated outside of town. The same measures will be taken against dogs that continue to attack people.
Kashihakumwa urged victims to report such cases to the police instead of settling for small compensations. He said the victims have the right to open civil cases against negligent dog owners.Meanwhile, town spokesperson Ottilie Shingenge said that community safety remains the council’s top priority.
She reminded residents that dogs can pose risks to children, elders and the public.
She urged all owners to ensure their pets are properly cared for, supervised and securely kept at home. – taimihaihambo2000@gmail.com
