I get asked one question all the time: “How do I get a business idea?” And my answer is always the same — business is about solving problems. If you solve a problem, people will pay you. That principle works. But today, I want to challenge young Namibians to think bigger. Not just “quick hustle” money, but bigger and forever businesses — ventures that grow with the country, create jobs, and last beyond one season.
Fortunately, the timing has never been better. Namibia has launched its Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6), which will span the period from 2025 to 2030. And inside that plan are billions of dollars and clear roadmaps to transform our economy. If you’re serious about starting a business, NDP6 is your blueprint.
Housing and infrastructure: Build where others fear
NDP6 promises 50,000 affordable houses by 2029. That means opportunities in construction, land servicing, roofing, plumbing, and low-cost housing designs. Young contractors can register companies, form partnerships, and supply skills to these projects. If you’re in construction, don’t wait — align with this housing agenda and pitch your services.
Agriculture and food security: Feeding the nation
Namibia still imports too much of its food. NDP6 wants to change that by boosting local production and processing. For young entrepreneurs, this means business in poultry, eggs, milling, horticulture, agro-processing, and packaging.
Imagine not only growing food but also packaging and branding it “Made in Namibia.” That’s building wealth in our villages and towns.
Renewable energy and Green Hydrogen: The future is here
Our country is being called a “green hydrogen giant.” Energy projects will need logistics, housing, catering, safety equipment, transport, and local services. You don’t need to own a power plant — you can run the businesses that support it. Just think: every worker in Lüderitz needs food, accommodation, and transport. Youth can build those businesses now.
Recycling and circular economy: Turning waste into wealth
NDP6 sets a target: 14% of Namibia’s waste must be recycled by 2030. That’s jobs in plastic collection, glass crushing, charcoal bag recycling, and e-waste recovery. Imagine starting with simple collection hubs in your town, selling baled plastics to bigger processors. Waste is money waiting to be picked up.
Digital and services: Building smart solutions
Government is digitising services. That means demand for apps, e-government platforms, cybersecurity, digital payments, and IT solutions. Young coders and IT graduates can step in and build the tools that Namibia’s ministries, municipalities, and SMEs will need.
Why this matters
Youth unemployment is one of Namibia’s toughest problems. But the opportunities are there. The money is there. The plan is there. What we need is for young Namibians to shift their mindset — from “small hustles” to nation-building businesses.
“If you want a forever business, attach your dream to a national problem and solve it better than anyone else.”
Final word
So next time you wonder, “What business should I start?” don’t look too far. Look at NDP6. Housing, food, energy, recycling, digital solutions — all waiting for bold youth to step in. Let’s build businesses that last, businesses that employ, and businesses that push Namibia forward.
The opportunity is right in front of us. The question is: will we grab it?
