Father pleads guilty to killing son

A father of a two-year-old boy, whose head was reportedly slammed twice against a concrete pole, along a railway line in Otavi in 2023, tendered a guilty plea for the murder of his son on Tuesday.

Thomas Muronga (29) faced three charges, including murder, assault by threat and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, alternatively assault on a member of the force in the execution of his duties or functions.

He tendered the plea of guilty on the murder charge in connection with the death of his son, Jason Sebulon Muronga on 25 August 2023, before Windhoek High Court Judge Claudia Claasen.

He further pleaded guilty to the assault by threat charge, which is in relation that on 25 August 2025 in the district of Otavi, the accused assaulted Julien Gamibes, by grabbing her body or clothes, wielding a knife or stone and threatened to kill Gamibes.

For the last count, the State alleged that Muronga assaulted Sgt. German Vanamale by stabbing him with a knife or other sharp object on his hands and wrists with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm.

On the alternative, it was stated that the accused assaulted Vanamale, a member of the Namibian Police, and who was on duty, by stabbing him with a knife whilst the officer was executing his duties or functions.

Additionally, that the assault happened whilst Vanamale was chasing the accused to apprehend and rescue him from attacks by members of the public.

He also pleaded guilty to this charge.

Afterwards, on the same court session, Claasen found him guilty on the three charges.

Muronga was found guilty of murder, assault by threat, but was convicted on the alternative of the last charge which dealt with the assault of a member of the force in the execution of his duties or functions.
