Unlicensed driver gets N$10 000 bail

RUNDU – A 33-year-old unlicensed driver, Frans Ndema Mawano, who was arrested at Kakoro village in the Kavango West region after his girlfriend reportedly fell from the vehicle he was driving and died on the spot, was granted bail in the Rundu court yesterday.

The accident, which led to Mawano’s arrest, happened in the early hours of Friday morning. Mawano appeared on three charges, namely culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or a substance with a narcotic effect, and driving without a valid driver’s licence.

According to a police report, the incident occurred at approximately 04h00 on Friday. Police said that Mawano, who was driving a red Toyota pick-up, was unlicensed and allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

They further alleged that the driver drove recklessly or negligently while intoxicated, causing a female passenger to fall out of the moving vehicle and die instantly at the scene.

The deceased was identified as 32-year-old Secilia David, a Namibian national and resident of Kakoro village.  Mawano’s case was postponed to 21 May 2026 for further police investigations.

He was represented by Rundu-based lawyer Benhard Tjatjara, and appeared before Rundu magistrate George Matali, while prosecutor Michael Munika represented the State in the matter.
