Castlebet Namibia has announced a sponsorship of N$300 000 in support of the Namibia Horse Racing Association’s (NHRA) annual horse racing event, scheduled to take place on 4 July 2026 in Rehoboth.
The sponsorship marks a significant step for both Castlebet Namibia and the local horse racing community, as efforts continue to revive and grow the sport in the country.
According to Castlebet spokesperson David Agusto, the investment aligns with the company’s evolving strategy and long-term vision.
Agusto explained that while Castlebet has traditionally been associated with football and betting, the organisation is now expanding its focus to include other sporting codes. He described the sponsorship as part of a broader shift in direction, aimed at diversifying their involvement in Namibian sport.
“We are always associated with football and betting, but this is the new direction that we are going in. It’s a new leaf and a new journey for us,” said Agusto.
He added that the company hopes to help elevate horse racing in Namibia to the level of internationally recognised events such as the Durban July, one of South Africa’s premier horse racing spectacles.
The sponsorship will primarily go towards prize money, which is expected to boost participation and attract horse owners, trainers and jockeys from across Namibia.
NHRA president Gottfried Mootu welcomed the sponsorship, describing it as a game changer for the sport.
He expressed gratitude to Castlebet Namibia for its support, noting that horse racing in Namibia has faced significant challenges over the years, particularly in efforts to revive and popularise the sport.
“We are very grateful, and we believe the sport will grow even more from here. Horse racing has a significant impact on society, and we aim to ensure that its benefits reach all regions. With Castlebet’s support, we are confident that we can improve and move closer to our goals,” Mootu added.
The upcoming event in Rehoboth is expected to draw increased attention this year, as stakeholders work towards restoring horse racing to its former prominence in Namibia.
