A 42-year-old teacher, accused of allegedly coercing a school hostel boy under the age of 16 into touching his private parts, has been granted bail in the Grootfontein Magistrate’s Court.
The accused, Alexis Awaseb, faces charges including rape, committing an immoral act with a child under the age of 16, bribery, two counts of assault, corruptly using office or position for gratification, two counts of child labour and exploitation of children, and one count of abuse of power or abuse of position of vulnerability.
Magistrate Adelinu Hailonga set the bail in the amount of N$2 000 with conditions.
Awaseb is to report to the nearest police station and not to interfere with State witness and police investigations.
The accused was arrested last year November after allegedly attempting to commit suicide while at the centre of investigations on child safety and institutional accountability where he was employed, Wilhelm Nortier Primary School.
Reports from other media houses indicate that the accused allegedly sneaked into the bed of a 13-year-old Grade 7 learner and made a sexual request, allegedly asking the boy to make his private parts “angry” during a power outage on 14 November 2025 in Grootfontein.
When the learner resisted, Awaseb allegedly fondled the boy before the victim fled and hid under a roommate’s bed.
Subsequently, a case was then opened with the police after confessions were heard that other learners had been similarly sexually touched by the teacher.
It is alleged that Awaseb had been staying in the hostel since 2021 and that in the same hostel, similar incidents of sexual misconduct among boys were reported. Awaseb is alleged to have escaped from the hostel and attempted suicide after learning he was under investigation.
He was arrested only after this attempt.
Furthermore, Awaseb was reportedly scheduled for a disciplinary hearing on 17 November 2025 concerning separate fraud and corruption charges.
These charges, amounting to over N$20 000, relate to monies received for learner enrolment at the school in January 2025.
The matter will be back in court on 27 May 2026.
