The newly proclaimed Divundu Village Council in Mukwe Constituency in Kavango East will soon open for business as its administrative facility is almost complete. The council has also appointed its CEO who will oversee its administrative functions.
The Rundu Town Council’s incumbent finance and IT strategic executive, Athanasius Ndjamba Maghumbo, has been appointed as the new CEO of Divundu Village Council (DVC).

When New Era visited the site last Friday, the contractor could be seen tiling, painting and laying interlocks at a car park at the village council offices built within a walking distance from the Mukwe Constituency councillor’s offices with a few metres separating the two entities.

“Athanasius Maghumbo was the successful candidate for the CEO position and he has been endorsed by our urban and rural development minister Sophia Shaningwa after we made the recommendation. Initially the CEO was supposed to start on the 1 July but due to unforeseen circumstances he will now start on 1 August,” said Ludwig Thikusho, the Kavango East Regional Council’s chief regional officer.

However, the village council still has to appoint its administrative staff.
“As soon as the CEO takes up office on the 1st of August he will be responsible to recruit the DVC’s administrative officials following official procedures,” stated Thikusho.

The Divundu Village Council, following the recent local authorities elections, now has Joseph Dinyando (Swapo) as chairperson of the council, Josefine Maghambayi (Swapo) as vice-chairperson and Fulgensia Mukerenge (Swapo), Christopher Kupembona (Swapo) and Frans Mwamo (APP) as ordinary members of council.

The DVC offices as well as the reticulation system are at the final stages of construction at a cost of N$10 million and N$14 million respectively.

Divundu is 200 kilometres east of Rundu, along the Trans-Caprivi/Zambezi Highway on the south-eastern banks of the Kavango River in the Kavango East Region.

Divundu is a settlement of 5 430 residents, according to the last census results. For now the Divundu Village Council will operate from a rented office at Divundu until when the constructed offices are fully completed.
