Two people – one of them a 40-year-old man and a two-month-old baby – died on the spot on Saturday afternoon in a car crash at Ncancana village, south of Rundu. The driver of the vehicle they were travelling in reportedly has no driver’s licence.

The driver, whose identity is known to New Era but cannot be revealed at this stage, will face charges of culpable homicide and driving a motor vehicle without driver’s licence, pending the decision of the Prosecutor General whether to prosecute him or not.

He was driving a Silver Toyota Hilux pick-up truck on the Rundu-Cuma gravel road with 10 passengers on board when he lost control of the vehicle and it overturned. “The case will be forwarded to the Prosecutor General for a decision whether to prosecute the driver or not,” said the Kavango East acting crime coordinator, Detective Chief Inspector Chrispin Mubebo, who also confirmed the fatal road accident to New Era.

The next of kin of the two deceased have already been notified about the fatal accident. The victims have been identified as Sevelinus Mandavero and two-month-old Johannes Haingura, both from Shakambu village. The other eight passengers reportedly sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
