It’s official. The deal is signed, sealed, delivered. Following a report in our maiden edition of New Era Weekend on Saturday, it was widely speculated that Brave Warriors forward Deon Hotto-Kavendjii is on the verge of joining Bloemfontein Celtic.
It has now been confirmed by the Free State outfit that the purple-haired winger, who hails from the coastal town of Swakopmund, has now been officially signed as a Celtic player.
Hotto-Kavendjii, alongside other six new signees, were unveiled at the Dr Molomemla Indoor Hall at the Supporters General Meeting in the Free State capital, Bloemfontein, yesterday morning, where the club outlined its plans for the 2016/2017 football campaign
Celtic has undergone a major squad overhaul following a lacklustre season last term by their own standards. The other newcomers are Ketokwakhe Masuku, Cheslyn Jampies, Mpho Maruping, Sibusiso Mxonyana, Ausaye Nyondo and Tlou Molewkane.
The Namibian international joined Lamontville Golden Arrows in the SA Professional Soccer League (PSL) three seasons ago and proved to be one the club’s most valuable players over his three-year spell with the Kwazulu-Natal outfit.
He joined the Durban team together with African Stars’ teammate Chris Katjiukua, but the Namibian pair suffered relegation in only their debut season. Hotto-Kavendjii played a pivotal role in steering Arrows back to South Africa’s elite league in only their first attempt.
Following a near-faultless display in the 2015 COSAFA Cup, the speedy Namibian winger became hot property and was on the radar of PSL giants Orlando Pirates, but the reported interest never materialised into anything more.
Hotto-Kavendjii rose to prominence when he joined Katutura glamour football club African Stars in the 2012/2013 season from Swakopmund outfit Blue Boys FC. He made his senior debut for the Brave Warriors in the same season and would be best remembered for his cracking goal in the 1-all draw against the mighty Super Eagles of Nigeria in a crucial FIFA World Cup qualifier at Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek.
