The Constituency Councillor for Tsumeb in the Oshikoto Region, Lebbius Tobias, has lashed out at local institutions and some government organisations, saying they are incompetent and do not provide the necessary services needed by the community.

He strongly urged them to shy away from bossy tendencies as they are there to serve the interests of people instead of officials sitting idly and spending the whole day reading newspapers in their offices at the expense of service delivery.

“We should get out of offices to meet people and share information with them. That way we can educate them on matters that are of concern to the community. I have never heard of any government ministry that has called a meeting to deliberate with community members and this should not be the case,” said Tobias,

Tobias also took issue with some officials in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration, saying he has received numerous complaints from members of the public about their indifferent attitude.

“If an awareness meeting is held with the public, all those altercations will be minimised because they will be informed how the ministry operates and what is mostly needed,” said the constituency councillor.

He was speaking at a local community meeting held in Tsumeb yesterday where he furthermore expressed disappointment in the poor attendance of invited stakeholders and government officials.

“The reason for this meeting is to inform you that all of us are tasked with responsibilities, and we should take those responsibilities very seriously and put them into action. These gatherings help us discuss ways to implement our ideas, therefore we should lay our hands on tasks that are of importance,” said Tobias.

He also took a swipe at the municipality which cries about the town being dirty: “The municipality has a health department but I have never seen them creating awareness programmes to educate people on the importance of keeping the environment clean. Instead, they focus on chasing away hawkers who are trying to make a living. Yes, I understand there should be regulations but they should not just focus on one thing. Once the community is educated they will be able to keep the town clean, beginning with their homes and going outwards.”
