Two city planners from Germany on Tuesday planted fruit and other trees at three primary schools in Lüderitz, where they also shared tips on gardening with learners.

Michael Weijers and Martin Lyhme planted trees at Helen Van Rhijn Primary, Diaz Primary and Nautilus Primary.
At Helen Van Rhijn, the duo planted eight fruit trees and one ‘shade tree’. They also planted two lemon, two guava, two mango and two grape trees, plus one to provide shade. Helen Van Rhijn Primary has a school garden and the two shared gardening tips with learners.

Weijers explained that they planted the trees at primary schools to teach learners how to grow, plant and take care of trees.
The trees would grow and produce fruit later should learners take care of them, he said.

He indicated they would conduct follow-ups every year to check on how the trees grow.
“Here in the desert it is important to learn how to grow a plant from scratch, since it is more difficult to grow trees in this part of the country compared to the northern part”, stated Weijers.

GROW IN DESERT
Lyhme who was in Lüderitz four years ago was satisfied with the trees he planted during that time.
The fact that the trees he planted have grown is an indication the Lüderitz Town Council took good care of the plants, he said.

“Trees can even grow in the desert. If you can make the soil better, and take care of the plants, we can make the town more beautiful,” said Lyhme.

The duo was accompanied by the Lüderitz Town Council community development officer, Victoria Hameva.
