Oshakati Town Council has built a new livestock impounding kraal at Okaku Kiipupu area. The new kraal, built for N$330 000, will replace the existing one at Ekuku Settlement.

According to Oshakati Town Council public relations officer Jackson Muma, because of the development of a new residential area at Ekuku settlement and an increase in the number of livestock found roaming around town, the town council decided to relocate the impounding kraal to Okaku Kiipupu.

The new kraal will be bigger than the old one in the Ekuku area and will also make provision for impounded animals, sick animals and small livestock, including sheep and goats, according to Muma.

“It took the contractor a few weeks to complete the kraal and it is expected to be operational soon.
“However, the community around Oshakati is requested to keep their livestock out of town boundaries, as the presence of livestock in the mix of vehicles and properties can be very disturbing and pose a danger to lives as well,” Muma said.

Having livestock roaming around town not only causes road accidents, but also tarnishes the image of the town and thus the council will not hesitate to impound any livestock found in town.

Muma further warned livestock owners not to obstruct municipal officials when they are busy impounding animals in town.
He said obstructing the confiscation of unauthorised animals is an offense in itself, according to local authority regulations.
