Standard Bank Namibia recently handed over awards to top performing learners in last year’s Grade 10 and 12 examinations.

The bank awarded cash prizes worth N$280 000 to 84 learners and 28 schools countrywide. The awards ceremonym which took place on January 29, formed part of the bank’s “Investing in Academic Excellence” initiative.

The bank handed over cash prizes to top performers in each region. The schools in the respective regions with the highest number top performers also received cash prizes.

“Standard Bank has ploughed back N$1.4 million into this initiative over a period of five years,” said Sigrid Tjijorokisa, company secretary and head of corporate social investment.

Tjijorokisa singled out two learners for their work, determination and for achieving success despite difficult circumstances: Calvin Thompson and Tulipamwe Omwene Petrus.

“Calvin and Tulipamwe’s stories show how a supportive environment created by parents and teachers can positively impact learners’ academic performance. What all learners seem to have in common is a vision for their future. One of the key lessons is to never let personal circumstances or your surroundings distract you from optimising your full potential,” said Tjijorokisa.
