Kambogho Johannes, 42, is fighting for his life after he was attacked by a hippo while trying to cross the river in a dugout canoe at Divundu.

Johannes was attacked by a hippo on his way from a shebeen last Thursday night. He wanted to cross the river to his girlfriend’s place on the other side of the Kavango River.

He reportedly sustained serious injuries including a broken arm and he lost a lot of blood.
“He was rushed to Andara hospital where he was admitted and later transferred to Rundu hospital,” said Detective Chief Inspector Chrispin Mubebo, who is the acting regional crime investigations coordinator for Kavango East Region.

Johannes was later transferred to Windhoek as his injuries were said to be life-threatening.
Meanwhile, a man was found dead in the river by residents of Shitemo village last Friday night. The deceased had gone fishing on Thursday and he was found dead the next day.

He was identified as Maghoma Paulus Shampapi, 35, a resident of Shitemo village.

In a separate incident the body of Johannes Paulinus Haushiku, 45, from Karukuta village was found floating in the Kavango River.
“We are investigating all the abovementioned cases and our people should be warned that the water level in the river is high so they should be cautious when crossing the river or go fishing or swimming, as it is a serious risk,” said Mubebo.
