Community members in Tsumeb Constituency that have been for years now struggling to make a living by selling along the streets in the burning sun will soon have a decent shelter to conduct their business.
The constituency council is in the process of building a business complex that will cater for street vendors and any other individuals that would like to pursue business. The facility will eventually cost over $10 million and be equipped with storage facilities where perishable products can be stored.
This was brought to light by the Constituency Councillor Lebbius Tobias, who said that the project is among the resolutions that the council has embarked on to assist community members to become sustainable as well as to reduce poverty.
“By so doing we are helping our people, as this creates employment and gives them an opportunity to grow their business and develop the community,” said Tobias.
He added that through his office they have established an agricultural project at Ondundu on a portion of land measuring three hectares, which was offered by the municipality.
“This project is aimed at producing food products that will be distributed locally especially to senior citizens and the vulnerable. At the moment we have already started planting, which is just a preliminary procedure to see if the project will work out and we have already drilled boreholes and done with fencing,” said Tobias.
However, he said that due to a lack of funds they are unable to employ people but he is optimistic that once the project gains enough strength it will provide jobs. Currently there are only volunteers.
Tobias availed himself to the people stating that he is not only ready to listen to criticism and complaints but positive ideas as well for the constituency office to operate in the interest of the community.
