Lawyer in court for alleged rape

Home Crime and Courts Lawyer in court for alleged rape

Windhoek

A lawyer who is married made an appearance in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court yesterday facing a charge of rape – his second one.

Jaco Kennedy, 29, appeared before magistrate Claudia Claasen. He allegedly raped a woman at the end of December last year in Windhoek. New Era learned he allegedly gave a woman a lift to work, but on the way he allegedly raped her, then proceeded to drive to work. The woman allegedly informed her colleagues to take down the number plate of the car while she was in the car.

Kennedy allegedly managed to flee but he was later arrested.

Kennedy, who was previously a magistrate, has another pending case of rape involving a different woman that reportedly took place in January last year.

He will return to the Katutura Magistrate’s Court on March 24 to plead to the charges in the first matter. The first matter happened in January last year for which Kennedy was granted bail. Garth Joseph represented Kennedy.

The State represented by Granny Paulus objected to Kennedy being granted bail, due to the seriousness of the offence and because the complainant filed a statement objecting to bail being granted. Kennedy will bring a formal bail application on Friday.
