“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Martin Shilompoka, who was seriously injured at the B2Gold Otjikoto Mine this December, and who passed away Friday morning. Martin was a valuable member of our team, and we will miss him,” Mark Dawe, managing director of B2Gold Namibia said on Friday.
Shilompoka was seriously injured on December 28, 2015 during a re-fueling operation when he was trapped between a diesel truck and a dozer. Following emergency medical treatment by the mine’s Life Support Paramedics, he was initially transported to the Mediclinic Otjiwarongo, whereafter he was admitted to the Roman Catholic Hospital in Windhoek where he remained in critical condition.
He succumbed to his multiple injuries on Friday, January 22, 2016. Shilompoka had been a machine operator at the mine since April 15, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Aili, and his son.
The appropriate Namibian authorities were immediately notified of the accident and are expected to conduct a thorough investigation. “Having learned from this experience, every effort will be made to ensure that similar accidents will be avoided in the future,” Dawe added.
