Seven-year-old Nazneen Gaes, a Grade 2 learner of Orban Primary, was one of the thousands of pupils who were all geared up for school with her Standard Bank Buy-a-Brick eraser in hand when the schools re-opened last Wednesfay.

This is the drive with which Standard Bank is approaching all schools to come on board with the Buy-a-Brick initiative this year. The token brick comes in the form of an eraser – a useful stationery item for any learner’s education. The erasers are sold for N$5.00 each and it is ultimately for a good cause – putting a roof over poor families’ heads. Launched last October, Standard Bank’s Buy-a-Brick initiative is a corporate social responsibility project geared towards raising funds for the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia to build decent houses for disadvantaged communities in the country. This in turn will help the government in addressing the housing shortage in the country.

“This is our call out campaign to all schools to join us in helping these poor communities by giving them the opportunity to have a proper place they can call home. The housing challenge is everyone’s responsibility so play your part as a good Namibian citizen,” says Sigrid Tjijorokisa, Custodian of the Standard Bank Buy-a-Brick initiative. As part of this CSI project, Standard Bank has be distributing order forms to schools countrywide this week.
