Marco Fishing has awarded a study loan to 21-year-old Miriam Mhata, who is a second year student at the University of Namibia.

The loan recipient is pursuing a higher diploma in accounting and auditing.
The general manager of Marco Fishing, Kurt Laufer, emphasised that the company remains committed to contributing to the socio-economic development of Lüderitz and the //Karas Region.

Laufer said that Mhata is however not the first student to receive a study loan from the company, as since 2000 three other recipients were supported financially in their studies at Unam and the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), formerly the Polytechnic of Namibia. He said the three graduates are currently employed by the company. They are Reeva van Rooyen, a senior bookkeeper; Kalsen Neliwa, the head of exports and sales, and Geneveve Barry the human resources officer.

During the handover of the study loan the !Nami#nus Constituency councillor Jan Scholtz applauded the fishing company for assisting the needy student.

He said Marco Fishing went the extra mile in its corporate social responsibility, adding that the initiative is a very smart public partnership which will go a long way in helping the people in the community.

Scholtz encouraged the student to do well in her studies and not mess up on the opportunity given to her, which could change her future.

Scholtz called upon other companies in Lüderitz to follow suit so that no one in the community is left out and for the poor not to suffer.

Mhata, who could not contain her excitement and joy, said that she was very happy for the big opportunity that has knocked on her door.

“It is because of this company that my dreams to become someone in life will not
be shattered, as financing my studies was a challenge. This is a company that shows commitment to society and it is willing to give back to society at any given time,” enthused Mhata.

She advised fellow students to make the most of their studies.
Mhata has already scored distinctions in four of her university subjects, including accounting.
