A car on its way to Mariental from Maltahöhe overturned at around 11h00 on Monday morning, killing four people – including three children – instantly and leaving six other people seriously injured.
The Land Cruiser, in which the ten people were travelling, overturned on the main road that links Maltahöhe to Mariental, killing the 42-year-old driver along with three school-going children, aged between 14 and 15.
Hardap Regional Commander, Commissioner Andries van der Byl said the accident may have been due to overloading, as there were ten passengers in the Land Cruiser with their belongings.
Sources familiar with the driver said the children were due to return to school today. Commissioner van der Byl said the accident happened on the C19 main road that links Maltahohe to Mariental.
He said the other six passengers are seriously injured and have been admitted to the Mariental State Hospital.
The next of kin of the deceased have been informed and a police inquest docket has been opened, but the names of the victims had not yet been made public at the time of going to press.
