First Lady Monica Geingos shows her appreciation of the drawings of Arceline Mafale (in red), Moses Boois, left, and Marcel Kapiti yesterday after she spent time at the after-school at Bernard Nordkamp Centre in Katutura. She encouraged learners to be dedicated to their schoolwork as well as obedient to their parents. She also cautioned them to be environment conscious, and not to litter and set fire to trees and riverbeds. She listened to their likes and dislikes as they conveyed their dismay at having some bullies at school as well as teachers that beat them at times.
Learners attending the after-school classes come from 43 different schools across Windhoek. It is a place where they enhance their learning under volunteer teachers. First Lady Geingos invited the learners to visit State House during the course of next week. Many of the children are Aids orphans, while others are from broken homes. At the centre children can escape the burdens of life through games, knitting and learning to read. The centre is managed by Marybeth Gallagher.
