Bukalo
In its quest to modernise the area, the Bukalo Village Council switched on its first streetlights earlier this week, following the installation of the lights along the Katima Mulilo-Ngoma Road that snakes through the sleepy north-eastern settlement.
Swani Investment, a joint venture run by a Davies Sitali and a consortium of business partners, handed over the completed installation to Northern Electricity Distributor Company (Nored) – the custodian of power infrastructure in the region – on Monday.
The project, which was commissioned by the Zambezi Regional Council and cost government over N$1.5 million started in March this year and covers a stretch of about 500 metres along the Ngoma road that passes through Bukalo, as well as within the village’s boundaries.
A medium voltage (MV) power distribution line was also constructed.
Bukalo is situated over 40 kilometres east of Katima Mulilo and was declared a town in 2013. With its newly-proclaimed village council, Bukalo has an estimated population of over 6,000 inhabitants. Construction of major public infrastructure is already underway in the area, including a sewerage network, village council offices and a mass housing project.
Bukalo is also the traditional seat of the Masubia Chief, Kisco Liswani III, and his khuta.
