Swapo president Dr Hage Geingob is expected to chair a fiery central committee (CC) meeting today to weigh the recommendation to expel four members of the party’s youth league, including its secretary Dr Elijah Ngurare.

The other three facing expulsion are the Affirmative Repositioning movement’s leaders Job Amupanda, Dimbulukeni Nauyoma and George Kambala. The recommendation was made by the party’s politburo last Friday.

The expulsions appear to have divided the country and Swapo – with questions over perceived lack of justice and fairness in the manner the quartet was ushered to the exit door.

Geingob, who was part of the politburo meeting that recommended the expulsion of the four men, will be chairing his first CC meeting after taking over the party presidency in April. The politburo recommended the expulsions of Amupanda, Nauyoma and Kambala over their land activism through the Affirmative Repositioning movement, and Ngurare for sympathizing with the trio.

A member of the SPYL national executive committee (NEC) Eddy Kafita said today’s meeting presents Geingob with the opportunity to unify the party. “It will be the first meeting he will chair as Swapo president, thus it is important that he ensures the manifestation of unity as per the party objectives,” Kafita said.

“He has mentioned that he is a president for all and inclusivity has been his core message. It is our hope that the CC unite and bring back the expelled comrades for us to build a greater Namibia collectively.”
