The elderly at Nomtsoub old age home could not contain their joy after businessman Erasi Haleinge through his company ENH Civil Engineering donated 28 blankets worth N$10 000 to the home.
Haleinge handed over the blankets last week.
The home houses 27 elderly people. Some of the old people do not have family that care for them hence the donation was accepted with great joy and appreciation by the beneficiaries, who have had to endure very cold nights this winter.
Haleinge said ENH Civil Engineering saw it fit to donate the blankets as many of the elderly complained about getting cold when the company visited the home prior to the donation.
“We received a letter from the old age home requesting donations. We asked the senior citizens what their needs were and they spoke about how cold they were getting so we decided to donate the blankets,” Hailenge said.
The home is sustained through donations made by Good Samaritans that offer food assistance and other goods, after funding from some organizations that funded such activities dried up in recent years.
Tsumeb municipal spokeswoman Stella Imalwa said a committee established to run the home has through consultations decided to apply to the ministry for the old age home to be recognized as a welfare institution.
“The committee is busy putting in place all the necessary requirements by the ministry of health for the old age home to be recognized and subsidized as one of its welfare organizations,” she stated.
Imalwa further noted the old age home has in the past only managed to be run through residents and companies such as Namib Mills and Namfo that donated food to the home.
