Walvis Bay
The Walvis Bay-based Kudu rugby club last Saturday reached out to the needy and elderly of the Walvis Bay community.
The club, which is one of the town’s most impressive sports teams representing the region on national level, handed out food worth over N$25 000 to pensioners in Narraville and Kuisebmond.
The event took place on Saturday at Narraville rugby stadium and was witnessed by former mayor of Walvis Bay, Derek Klazen, who now serves as the deputy minister of urban and rural development.
Chairman of the club, Zane Janzen, said the club has been engaged in social responsibility progrmmes for the past four years despite relying on sponsors to carry out it obligations. He added that the club donated N$10 000 while sponsors such as Woermann Brock, Etosha Fishing, Walvis Bay Hardware and Tongaat donated N$15 000 to the initiative.
“This is just the start of the project. We intend to do this on a monthly basis but in future we intend to work through local churches so that we rather distribute food parcels through them instead of the pensioners themselves coming to collect them,” he explained.
He said the club is engaging stakeholders to look into the possibility of setting up a multi-purpose centre at Narraville to prepare youngsters to compete on international level.
Klazen thanked the club for assisting the needy saying it is heartening to see sports complementing government’s efforts to alleviate poverty among the vulnerable members of society.
