OSHAKATI – The unavailability of a docket at the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court delayed the trial of Negumbo Gaus Mwechiika, who is accused of assaulting his brother at the end of last year.

Mwechiika is charged with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The case, which was heard yesterday at the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court, could again not continue, as the docket was not available.

The case was remanded to March 31 for the docket to be brought before court.

An emotionally charged Mwechiika, who fumbled to find his words, pleaded with the court to grant him permission to collect his medication as well as his clothing from his mother’s house.

Juggling between Oshiwambo and broken Afrikaans, Mwechiika surprised the interpreter when he rudely told her he grew up in Grootfontein and does not speak Oshiwambo well.

He further informed the court he previously made arrangements to collect his items, however, he was denied entry to his mother’s house as she applied for a restriction order against him.

“I have a problem, my hands and my feet sweat a lot, but my medication is at home and I can’t get it, so is my clothes,” Mwechiika told the court.

In addition, the fuming Mwechiika pleaded with the court to reduce his bail money from N$1 000 to N$400 because he cannot afford to pay the N$1 000.

Mwechiika was arrested on December 10 last year for assaulting his brother.

Magistrate Vivian Ndlovu presided while Markus Angula prosecuted.
