OKAKARARA – The road between Okakarara and Okondjatu stretching over 100 kilometres will soon be tarred and feasibility studies are already underway for this capital-intensive project.

The road will see the realisation of easy and faster movement of people including tourists between the two areas.

This was revealed by Okakarara Town Council chief executive officer, Nathanael Karuaihe, who said although such plans were not initially budgeted for under the current year, the council approached the Ministry of Works and Transport which then approved the funds costing millions for the project.

“It was not in their plan but we approached the Minister of Works and Transport, Erkki Nghimtina, and it was approved and N$4 million was set aside for feasibility studies. That is how development is. The tender is already out. This is the shortest route from Botswana to the north, then you don’t have to go to Windhoek,” he said.

Further, he said consultants have been appointed to check the topography. Construction is expected to kick off early next year.

He also explained that the council is in agreement with the Roads Authority to upgrade roads at the town.

“Okakarara is a flat area and when it rains the water is not flowing well, so we want to create culverts so that when it rains the water will flow easily,” he disclosed.
For this purpose, he said, the Roads Fund Administration has given the town council an amount of N$700 000 to construct culverts.
