WINDHOEK – Watching with envy their celebrated rivals Black Africa basking in the sun with an unprecedented quarter haul of back-to-back MTC Premiership titles has been surely a bitter pill to swallow for Katutura glamour football club African Stars.
“Enough is enough,” chants Stars’ diehards who predict great things for the club in the current term as they go all out to dislodge the undisputed Namibian champions from the pedestal – come hell or high water.
Although Stars won the coveted Namibia Football Association (NFA) Bidvest Cup twice in a row, it’s the elusive league title the ambitious Reds have firmly set their eyes on this term.
Woody Jacobs’ charges are unbeaten after eight matches and sit comfortably on top of the bloated 16-team MTC Premiership with 20 points to their credit, one ahead of closest rivals and reigning champions BA, with a game in hand.
Perennial underachievers Tigers FC are just two points off the pace and judging by the team’s good showing in recent outings, the unpredictable Ingweinyama could pose a serious threat to both Stars and BA’s title aspirations.
Another sleeping giant, in the shape of FNB Orlando Pirates has suddenly awoken from its slumber – making a serious statement. Pirates 5th position on the log standings is an indication that the Ghosts must be considered serious title contenders this term.
The Buccaneers have been playing the most attractive football so far and boast a very well balanced squad laden with a mixture of highly talented youngsters, complemented by the veteran centre back pairing of Bryan Gurirab and Ivan Makina.
Sources close to the Ghosts say the players are committed and hungry to bring success to this great club, which boasts a rich tradition of winning things.
Coastal giants LHU Blue Waters and Unam (formerly Ramblers) are the dark horses for the coveted title race and could have a definite say with regard to the final destination of the title.
