WALVIS BAY – Voters in the Erongo Region who cast their votes in the elections on Friday were positive the winning party and new future president would bring social change and decent jobs.
Speaking to New Era on Friday and Saturday morning voters said the next president would improve their welfare by creating jobs, housing and socio-economic change.
Sara Geingos, a 64-year-old pensioner, said shortly before she voted on Friday at the Kuisebmond community hall that she was optimistic the next president would take the country to greater heights.
“I don’t care who is our next president. I just want him to look at our unemployment and poverty issues. We cannot be this old and still live as poor people. He must increase our pension as well,” Geingos appealed to the next leader.
First-time voter 18- year-old Heleni Shikongo also told New Era that whoever wins the elections must really look into youth development by creating business and job opportunities for the youth.
“This is my first time to vote and I just want to see change not only in terms of our social conditions, but a change in power. I want to see more youthful politicians representing young Namibians in parliament. Only then will we be able to make the relevant changes. Seeing change will also motivate all of us to vote again in the next elections,” she said.
Fisherman Sam Shikongo hopes the new parliamentarians and the new president will look at the equal distribution of Namibian resources, fight unemployment and corruption and also look at the availability of land for all.
“We are at a stage where land is regarded by many as a basic requirement and a must for every Namibian. Thus we must look at land distribution in a responsible and honest manner,” he said.
