WINDHOEK – The Chinese government will next year donate N$800 million for the upgrading of the road between Windhoek and the Hosea Kutako International Airport to a dual-carriage road.

This, it was revealed last week, would curb road accidents and ease the flow of traffic between the two destinations.

China’s Ambassador to Namibia, Xin Shunkang, made the announcement last Friday during a handover ceremony of solar panels to governors of Hardap, Kunene, Oshikoto, Omaheke and Otjozondjupa regions. The event was held at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The materials worth N$738 000 were donated by Donald Lee, the executive chairman of Exclusive Solar CC, a subsidiary of New Era Investment Holdings.

Lee said the initiative was intended to promote the use of solar energy products, while “the main objective of the plan is to provide solutions for the electricity problems in the country mainly in the rural area”.

He further told the governors that the donated materials are intended for households in rural areas without electricity and where there are children who are still in school.

The Chinese Ambassador said his embassy would buy more solar panels to distribute in rural areas and schools.

“We want to help the nation and provide a bright future for the youth,” said the Ambassador.

Prime Minister, Dr Hage Geingob thanked the Chinese Embassy and the New Era Investment and urged them to continue supporting the nation.

“I cannot discriminate against any company coming from any continent that is coming to help the country and thus the Chinese are setting up an example and we should continue to build the good relationship,” said the Prime Minister.
