WINDHOEK – The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director-General Paulus Noa yesterday said no official complaint was lodged against Windhoek Mayor Agnes Kafula following media reports on questionable land deals in Windhoek.
“No one has come forth with evidence that shows the mayor was involved in corruption and I can therefore confirm no case has been opened against her,” Noa told New Era upon inquiry.
“It is one thing to write reports and it is another when evidence is brought forth,” stated Noa.
Noa said the ACC was still waiting for someone to bring evidence substantiating claims Kafula might have corruptly obtained land or has been involved in corrupt land acquisitions.
Recent media reports said the mayor had allegedly obtained a plot for half the price than it was sold for at an auction recently.
The plot was allegedly sold to her for N$600 000 whilst many first time buyers lost out on land at the recent Windhoek Municipality auction due to exorbitant bidding prices.
Sources say that when aspiring land buyers shelve plans to buy erven due to unaffordability, senior city officials easily get their hands on the properties for a minimal price.
Kafula also came under fire after she allegedly requested that last season’s Big Brother Africa winner Dillish Mathews be awarded a plot of land on the basis that similar personalities such as Olympic medallist Frank Fredericks and Paralympian Johanna Benson had obtained land at a minimal price.
Yesterday senior management in the municipality had a closed door meeting to discuss issues related to land acquisition and discontent by the public.
The meeting, according to those in the know, was called to specifically address the allegations levelled against the mayor as well as the “land grab” that was initiated by Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) spokesperson Job Amupanda last Sunday.
Amupanda de-bushed a piece of land in the Kleine Kuppe residential area claiming he could not cope with the escalating rent prices in the city.
He reportedly together with George Kambala, Dimbulukeni Nauyoma and Desh Dallaz erected a sign on the piece of land that read “affirmative repositioning erf 2014.”
Corporate Communications Manager at the Windhoek Municipality Joshua Amukugo postponed a press briefing slated for yesterday because the mayor was out of town. The briefing was re-scheduled to today.
