WINDHOEK – The Roads Authority (RA) last week announced the appointment of Nexus Civils as the contractor for the construction of the Namalubi to Isize to Luhonono (Schuckmannsburg) road in the Zambezi Region.

Nexus Civils is 100 percent Namibian-owned with vast experience in road construction and has completed numerous capital and gravel roads for RA in the past.

The road, also known as District Road 3508, is 57 kilometers long and is a high priority in the Roads Master Plan for the Zambezi Region.

Once completed, the road will improve network connectivity, reduce maintenance costs of the road, reduce travelling time, road user costs and accidents. Additionally, it will also provide an all year round access to clinics and schools along the route.

A new gravel road, which is 33 kilometers long, will be constructed from Isize to Luhonono, while 22 kilometres from Namalubi to Kalimbeza to Isize will be surfaced to bitumen standard and an access road to the Kalimbeza rice farm (2km) will be surfaced to bitumen standard.

The road is located in the floodplains, thus, high fills of more than 1m (in most sections of the road) will be constructed.

This project is wholly financed by the government and will be implemented at a total cost of close to N$500 000.

The construction period is 30 months.

Ten SME contractors will participate in the project in partnership with Nexus Civils. The SME contractors who will be responsible for the construction of all concrete works on the project are Oshikoto Road Services, Mbango Construction Larissa Investment, Dhipah Trading cc,

Omupondo Construction, Shipiki Multi Enterprises, Flame Investment, Amakalu Construction, RN Mavenjono and Epatululo Trading.

The combined value of the SMEs’ portion of the project is over N$120 million, which amounts to 27 percent of the contract value.

Furthermore, approximately 300 temporary jobs will be created during the construction period.

The Consulting Engineer for this project is WML Consulting Engineers and the Roads Authority is responsible for the overall management of this project.
