ONDANGWA – The Shinime Primary School are the newly crowned champions of the popular Kwata Cricket, hosted by Cricket Namibia in Ondangwa, last weekend.
Sinime recorded more victory over other schools, to book their place in the final against Etambo Primary School who entered the competition as under dogs. The boys from Shinime held their tails up in the closely contested final and manage to defeat Etambo Primary by 19 runs, to claim first spot that came along with a floating trophy and gold medals.
Etambo had to settle for the 2nd place, while Olukolo Primary School defeated Wendy Private School by 24 runs, to occupy 3rd spot. Cricket Conveyor for Oshana, Pafunisia Josua could not contain her excitement on the number of young cricketers who showed tremendous interest in the game.
“We have come a long way with Cricket development programmes in the north, our efforts are beginning to bear fruit and the turn out today is evident enough that cricket is winning the hearts of many kids in the north,” said Pafunisia .
She said plans are underway to introduce hard ball cricket in the region, catering for young cricketers at the age of 15 and above.
“Kwata Cricket is played by kids between the age of 7-14 and it is more of an introductory phase played with minimal Cricket rules with the aim to arouse beginner`s interest and ultimately introduce them to the world of Cricket,” she added.
The tourney attracted 8 primary schools around Ondangwa participating in the one-day event under the auspices of Cricket Namibia in partnership with FNB Namibia, the sole sponsor of Cricket in the North.
