WINDHOEK – An ugly war of words has erupted between the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the TN Mobile CAF Women’s Championship and the Windhoek Municipality.
At the centre of the storm is the municipality’s alleged refusal to avail transport for bussing supporters to the Sam Nujoma and Independence stadiums for the continental showpiece currently taking place in the capital.
A source close to the LOC revealed to New Era that the municipality has pulled the plug on the LOC’s transport arrangements.
“It should be well understood that this is an event for all Namibians and it’s therefore incumbent upon all stakeholders to take ownership but some of our colleagues have now resolved to playing truant,” the source said.
“The Windhoek Municipality agreed in principal to provide free transport (buses) to ferry supporters from designated areas to the stadia but has since gone back on its word and this is totally unacceptable as such an undertaking will certainly nullify the hard work that has been put into the organization and extensive planning of hosting a successful event,” fumed the source, who is a LOC official.
Approached to shed light on the debacle, the public relations officer of the municipality, Lydia Amutenya, laughed off the apparent confrontation.
She said she was unaware of any misunderstanding between the two parties nor was she informed of any existing agreement between the LOC and the municipality that the latter should provide transport.
