Home National Youngsters battle it out at Kia football tourney

WINDHOEK – DTS Sports Club successfully hosted its 3rd annual KIA Youth Football Tournament in Windhoek last weekend, attracting a total of 42 teams from seven different clubs battling it out in four different age groups.

“The kids had a lot of fun. It was also very good from a sporting perspective. We are happy,” an overjoyed DTS spokesperson Heiko Kesselmann said.
KIA Motors Namibia was the main sponsor, dishing out N$5 000 for the tourney while former Ramblers midfielder Martin Krafft and Doc Munz also stepped in as co-sponsors. Kesselmann was delighted about the hosts’ U7 first team, dubbed the “DTS Pumas”.
Under the guidance of coaches Marius Boonzaaier and Fanie Bosman, the youngsters dominated most tourneys last year but somehow fell short a couple of times this year as a new crop of players were roped in and struggled to find their feet in the squad, but the youngsters finally lived up to expectations.
After a hard-fought tourney, the DTS youngsters ended up level on points with the Ramblers Lions, but their superior goal difference meant they took home the gold medal.
The biggest surprise of the day came from Windhoek outfit Swallows FC, who with all odds stacked against them claimed gold medals in both the U9 and U13 categories, to become the most successful club of the day. The U13 games were played at the multipurpose hall next to the football field.
Although the surface of the ‘Big Blue’ combined with some special rules led to confusion reigning supreme, the youngsters quickly adapted to the conditions and produced lots of fun. Swakopmund FC took top honours in the U11 division with the seasiders doing splendid showing throughout the day.
