Kudu rabies project progresses

Home Farmers Forum Kudu rabies project progresses

The research project to develop an antidote for rabies in Kudu’s this week proceeded with another step towards the implementation. Under the chairmanship of the patron, Dr Libertina Amadhila, a management committee was elected to make the necessary preparations so that the project can start at the game catching season in 2015. The management committee comprises of the NAU, NAPHA and the Ministries of Environment & Tourism and Agriculture, Water & Forestry.

The practical implementation will be done by Agra ProVision under the control of Dr Rainer Hassel.

At the next meeting in October agreements will be entered for inter alia the use of facilities at Waterberg Plateau Park where the research will be done as well as agreements with all participating parties which will determine the responsibility of each party.

Dr Amadhila was excited that the project eventually had progressed so far that attention can be given to all aspects for the practical implementation.

In the meantime contributions and commitments for N$1,68 million of the budgeted N$2,2 million were received from donors. The NAU currently negotiates for further funds with organisations. A separate banking account was created for persons or organisations who want to contribute towards this project.

Anybody who wants to make a contribution can deposit it into the following account:

EPA initialed

The European Partnership Agreement (EPA) has been initialed by Namibia and the European Union in Pretoria on July 15. This is about 2 ½ month before the expiry date which is October 1, 2014. The initialed document will now be made available to the legal advisers to finalize it technically which could take up to 2 years before it will be signed finally.

The initialing of the agreement is good news for the Namibian meat industry which is now ensured of levy free and quota free access to the European market which has been the preference market to Namibia the past few years. Other products which also get this advantage are fish and grapes.
