WINDHOEK – The wait for spring is still a long way off and the cold weather isn’t getting any better.
Just when Namibians thought the bite of the July winter cold earlier this week had let up, they were warned yesterday to prepare themselves for sub-zero temperatures this coming weekend.
Senior forecaster at the Namibia Meteorological Services in Windhoek, Olga Tjiueza, says temperatures showed a mild increase countrywide after the cold front since last weekend had Namibians, especially in the south, unpacking their full winter wardrobes.
He says Namibians can keep their warmest clothes at hand as a cold front will hit most of the country again by Saturday and Sunday.
Residents of the south will feel the sting the most with temperatures expected to drop to minus-three degrees Celsius and even more in some places.
Windhoek and other central towns will also experience colder weather and the thermometers will also produce minus readings of between one and three degrees.
The coastal areas were preparing for the dreaded east wind yesterday but that turned around and cloudy weather is expected for the remainder of the week, with mild temperatures of between nine and 20 degrees.
The north will be the most pleasant place to be in the coming days with minimum temperatures of between nine and 10 degrees and maximum temperatures in the mid-twenties forecast.
According to Tjiueza, the wind factor plays a major part in the drop in temperatures. “Our traditional late-winter easterly winds have started to pick up in some places and they are responsible for rather sharp drops in temperatures. Also, the geographical location of towns plays a role as you can witness big differences in temperatures in different suburbs in Windhoek. As from Saturday we will all experience some typical July winter blues but nothing too serious,” she said.
