…thanks to Coca Cola Namibia

WINDHOEK – After 23-years of unwavering commitment Coca Cola Namibia yesterday once again reaffirmed its dedication to the development of sports with a sponsorship of N$171 000 to the Namibia Schools Sports Union (NSSU).

The sponsored money will partly be used to host the much anticipated Coca Cola National Athletics Championship in Windhoek slated for April 11-12 at the Windhoek Independence Stadium, while the remaining money will be redirected to other sports codes and various NSSU development programmes at regional level. The Coca Cola National Athletics Championship, which is expected to attract close to 840 athletes started in 1991 with a mere N$15 000 sponsorship from Coca Cola and has today become a major stage for grooming and discovering new local talent. Last year alone the competition attracted more than 620 athletes from various regions with many improving and recording new personal best times as a total of 8 national records were posted. A total of 23 records were tumbled in 2012.

Marathon Sugar also threw their weight behind the NSSU with a sponsorship of N$45 000. Athletes from the Zambezi Region are yet to qualify for the national championship as they still have to host their regional competition this weekend and according to NSSU national co-ordinator  Solly Duiker event organizers decided to lower the qualification times for those athletes due to the unfriendly weather conditions in that region and also because most tracks are water-locked and athletes will struggle to meet the required qualification times.
