By Emma Kakololo WINDHOEK On the eve on the country’s 16th independence anniversary, Government has called on Namibians to remain united and continue safeguarding the country’s peace and stability. The call came from the Minister of Information and Broadcasting Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at a media briefing on Friday. Nandi-Ndaitwah said there was no reason why all Namibians, irrespective of their colour should not join in the celebrations, pointing out that all are jointly responsible for the peace and stability that prevails in the country. She said it was about time for tendencies where only blacks celebrate independence while whites do not, to stop. “You are all responsible for the peace that we have in our country. We all have a reason to celebrate,” she urged, adding that Namibians have set a tradition of maintaining peace and this tradition should be upheld. She also reminded the nation of a Cabinet decision several years back that the country’s independence would only be celebrated on a large scale after every five years. “Coming to independence celebrations this year, I hope the public can recall that some years back Cabinet took a decision that Independence will be celebrated every five years on a large scale, while years in between will be left to regional celebrations. Last year we had a big national celebration and the next will be in 2010,” she stated. This implies that all 13 regions are responsible for Independence celebrations in the areas under their jurisdiction this year, she said. As has always been the norm in Khomas region, the celebrations will be held at the Independence stadium. President Hifikepunye Pohamba will be the main speaker, while the Founding Father, former President Sam Nujoma will be the main speaker at Mariental.
