By William J. Mbangula Oshakati The Oluno Rehabilitation Centre at Ondangwa will celebrate its tenth anniversary in style next Friday, April 7. The officer in charge of the centre, Ben Buchane, announced this during an interview with New Era. Oluno Rehabilitation Centre was established in 1996 under the then Ministry of Prisons and Correctional Services to handle convicted criminals and to ensure their proper rehabilitation. It is now resorting under the Ministry of Safety and Security. According to Buchane, a lot of activities are planned for the anniversary on Friday. These include cultural performances, prestige drilling, gymnastics, spiritual activities and a prize-giving ceremony. Amongst the key speakers will be the King of Ondonga, Kauluma Elifas, who is also the Chairperson of the Council of Traditional Leaders in Namibia; George Nelulu, the Chairperson of the Oukwanyama Traditional Authority; the Councillor of Ondangwa Constituency, Ismael Uugwanga, and the Mayor of Ondangwa town Priskilla Nashandi. As part of the rehabilitation effort, Buchane noted, the centre is offering various training activities such as pig farming, gardening, nursery, mechanical work, spray painting and panel-beating, bricklaying, basket making, and spiritual and social welfare care. “Most of the above will be displayed during the tenth anniversary celebrations,” he said. The centre has a carrying capacity of 568 inmates but currently has only 400.
