By Kuvee Kangueehi WINDHOEK More surprises are in store this weekend as the MTC NFA Cup continues come Saturday at the Kuisebmund Stadium in Walvis Bay. The most lucrative tournament in the country has been filled with excitement and surprises since it started in January and is expected to raise the adrenalin of more soccer fans this weekend when Oshakati City FC take on Cymot SKW in the first semifinal before holders Ramblers lock horns with Orlando Pirates in the second match of the day. After last weekend’s quarterfinals in Oshakati where most of the underdogs emerged victorious after producing some shocking results it has become very difficult to predict the outcome. The Katutura giants who were not given a chance against log leaders Civics FC must be in a confident mood and defending champions Ramblers must be on their toes to avoid a disappointment. Pirates, despite being second best against Civics, where the champions dominated the midfield and enjoyed ball possession, still emerged victorious. Thanks to poor finishing by their strikers William Chilufya and Wilbert Mazembe. Chilufya put Civics ahead in the 41st minute when Chilufya pounced on to a loose clearance and put the ball into the net. Pirates had few opportunities, but with time running out finally got their breakthrough. From a quick counter attack Pirates’ striker Frans de Muinda beat the defence and put the ball into the net. The match went into penalties and disaster immediately struck for Civics when Pirates’ goalie Helmut Maletsky saved Civics’ first spot kick by recalled veteran midfielder Congo Hindjou. With both teams’ spot kicks going in after that, Pirates managed to hold on for victory. Ramblers themselves last weekend were not in top gear and a last minute goal by Bernadine Mbilizi gave Ramblers a 2-1 win against Chief Santos. Samson John put Ramblers ahead with a great shot in the 43rd minute, but Leonard Somseb equalised for Chief Santos with a 74th minute penalty after a handball in Ramblers’ box. With a penalty shootout looming, Ramblers finally broke Chief Santos’ defence. From a quick counter-attack, Bernadine Mbilizi was set clear and with only the goalie to beat he made no mistake from close range. The victory sees Ramblers through to the semi-finals and still in with a chance of winning the double. Cymot SKW and Oshakati City are the surprise semi-finalists of the MTC NFA Cup and both teams will be going for the kill tomorrow. Cymot SKW, despite being at the bottom of the log, have impressed during cup competitions and are in their second major cup semifinal. The premier league rookies earlier in the season went as far as the semifinal in the First National Bank Cup and will fancy their chances to make it to the final this time around. City on the other hand enjoyed a good run at home when they defeated pre-tournament favourites Blue Waters last weekend but can expect a tough match against Oshakati City. Meanwhile, Nampa reports that this year’s edition of the MTC Namibia Football Association (NFA) Cup will not only be financially rewarding for the winning team but it will also provide some incentives for a couple of spectators. A press statement from the NFA on Wednesday indicated that two lucky fans could each win a cell phone sponsored by Mobile Telecommunications (MTC) Ltd during the semi-final round set for Walvis Bay on Saturday. To come into contention for the cell phones, the first 100 spectators going through the gates will each get an opportunity to kick a ball from the penalty mark through a hoop that is tightened to the goal post. The successful kickers will qualify for the draw that will take place during the half-time break of the second semi-final match of the day. The first 800 spectators through the turnstiles will each get a T-shirt and other promotional material. The first semi-final is between Oshakati City and SKW at 14h00 while the second match is the titanic clash between defending champions Ramblers and Orlando Pirates at 16h00. – Additional reporting Namibia Sport and Nampa
