By Frederick Philander WINDHOEK It took his graphic creative mind a mere 60 minutes to come up with the winning entry for the National Arts Council’s logo and he walked away with the first prize of N$2 000. The man behind the appropriate and stylistic logo is Christian Maketo, a self-taught graphic artist from Rundu who now works in the capital. His creation was selected as the best from many entries in response to a public call from the National Arts Council recently. “Graphic designing came quite naturally to me as a person who liked to draw sketches during my school years until I acquired some computer skills after leaving school. To pursue my dreams of becoming a graphic artist, I attended a number of practical courses in Johannesburg and at Unam,” said Maketo, who works as a senior graphic artist for a local company selling condoms. Probed about the symbolism reflected in the logo, Maketo had the following to say: “The sun and 13 rays represent a new beginning for the arts in the country in all 13 regions and the lines symbolise a brush, strings and snares as well as a guitar. The colours of the national flag are well represented, reflecting the country’s rainbow nation with its diverse cultures. The white dots in the green is part of that diversity.” He further stated that the blue body represents a person sharing knowledge with others. Besides working full-time for a company, Maketo runs his own part-time graphic business from his home in Katutura.
